Firefighters arrived on the scene within three minutes after multiple 911 calls were made from residents and tourists reporting heavy smoke and flames coming out of the building, Jonathan Baxter, a spokesperson for the San Francisco Fire Department, told SFGATE Monday.
Baxter said the blaze erupted outside the facility at the intersection of Buchanan Street and Geary Boulevard and spread to the interior, causing “extensive damage to the outside and moderate damage to two floors inside.” Firefighters extinguished the blaze within an hour; the building was unoccupied, and no one was injured.
Officials still need to review video footage and collect more information before they can confirm the cause and origin of the fire, Baxter said. SFGATE attempted to reach the San Francisco YMCA for more information but did not hear back by time of publication. The building is “Temporarily Closed for Indoor Wellness and Senior Programming,” according to its
, which also included a link to its outdoor wellness programming. It remains unclear when it might reopen. The facility was also listed as closed on Google Maps.
