World Cup soccer is coming to the Bay Area.
Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara will serve as one of the host cities for the 2026 World Cup, FIFA announced Thursday.
You'll have to wait nearly half a decade to get your fix, though. After the abomination that is this fall's men's World Cup in Qatar, the World Cup is set to return to its usual summer schedule in July 2026. Along with San Francisco, other American cities, such as Los Angeles and Seattle, and cities in Canada and Mexico, are set to host games. The cities were announced with a rolling reveal starting with the West Coast cities in the three countries and moving east.
The World Cup has been in the area twice before. Stanford Stadium hosted several men's games when the United States hosted in 1994. And Stanford and San Jose hosted women's games in 1999, including a 2-0 U.S. women's national team semifinal win over Brazil at Stanford. "This is a really big deal but, again, we are grateful that you're here, we're grateful that we're going to show the world why the Bay Area is the place for the World Cup to be," two-time World Cup champion Brandi Chastain said Thursday."And we will do once again what we did in 1994, which is host an amazing games and activities that will happen outside of the stadium and show the world how beautiful our community is.
