San Francisco has experienced a 20% decrease in fatal drug overdoses in 2024 compared to the same period last year. The city recorded 589 accidental overdose deaths through November 2024, down from 760 in 2023. Public health officials attribute the decline to expanded treatment options and reduced barriers to accessing medications like buprenorphine and methadone.
Fatal drug overdoses in San Francisco are down 20% in 2024 compared to this time last year, according to the latest report from The City’s chief medical examiner.
“This includes a 54% increase in buprenorphine prescriptions filled by the department since January 2023 and a 34% increase in accessing methadone in The City compared to 2023,” said Dr. Grant Colfax, the director of the San Francisco Department of Public Health, in a Tuesday press conference. The public health department has increasingly issued utilized injectable buprenorphine, which officials said allows for weekly — or even monthly — doses rather than daily ones. This, they said, allows patients more autonomy and can reduce the stigma of receiving treatment for substance-use disorders.

They said that amounts to nearly twice as many patients as in 2023.
