The project is scheduled to begin at the end of this year, bringing a new look to the iconic landmark.
People walk along the Embarcadero outside San Francisco's Ferry Building. The landmark is undergoing renovations later this year.The landmark's management announced in a press release that upcoming plans to"enliven the building" include adding a civic plaza overlooking the bay, complete with canopy structures and outdoor dining amenities.
Up to three new restaurants will be added to the north side of the building, and the glass at the building's rear will be extended to make room for new"Bay Front Kitchens." These will provide an"indoor-outdoor experience," in an effort to open up the space and take full advantage of its views of the bay. This portion of the design will make room for two large waterfront restaurants, plus new storefronts that will connect to the building's interior.
The project is intended to also revitalize the Ferry Plaza at the back of the building by adding a pedestrian walkway, new lighting and electrical systems, more outdoor seating, and a retail kiosk. "This planned investment signifies the waterfront’s revival following the pandemic. The proposal demonstrates the ability of the historic Ferry Building to adapt to a changing San Francisco to remain a central gateway and gathering place with grand historic significance," the press release states.
