“Will they continue to work in the future as the virus continues to change?” Han said of antiviral medication. “That's a good question that no one can answer at this point.” California declared a bird flu state of emergency last month. Thirty-seven of the country’s 66 cases since the start of 2024 were recorded in California, although none have been reported in The City. Han said “almost all U.S. cases have reported mild illness,” with the Louisiana death an “exception.”
