President Trump's new executive order targeting 'anti-Semitism' on college campuses has sparked fears among international students in San Francisco who participated in pro-Palestinian protests. Many students with F-1 visas are now worried about being deported for expressing their political views. Attorneys are preparing to represent these students, emphasizing their First Amendment rights and the legal process involved in revoking F-1 visas.

International students in San Francisco with F-1 visas who participated in pro-Palestinian protests are facing the threat of deportation following a new executive order signed by President Donald Trump. The order aims to combat what the administration calls 'the explosion of anti-Semitism' on college campuses. Since October 2023, numerous Bay Area university students have organized protests on both sides of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

At least 20 pro-Palestinian actions were organized by students at the University of San Francisco alone. Jayden Joeckel, a student at the University of San Francisco and member of the group 'Students for Palestine,' says many of his friends who participated in these protests are now scared. 'They are telling us that they are scared. I think it's completely reasonable to live in a country where you have rights that are expected to be granted, and when a new administration comes in and tells you you can be deported for expressing your First Amendment rights - it's shocking,' said Joeckel.Attorneys like Jeff Wozniak from the National Lawyers Guild are preparing to represent these students. Wozniak emphasizes that students on F-1 visas have First Amendment free speech rights and their visas are not contingent on their political views. 'These students that are on F-1 visas have First Amendment free speech rights. You don't get an F-1 visa based on your political views. It is for you to go to college and get an education,' said Wozniak. According to Wozniak, revoking a student's F-1 visa is a process that requires a review by ICE, other government departments, and the university. One of the main concerns now is how the federal government will identify which students with F-1 visas participated in these protests. The University of San Francisco has already sent an email to students outlining their plan to protect students from ICE agents, stating that they will only share student information if compelled by a signed court order or a verified claim of imminent danger to public safety. Organizations like the Arab Resource and Organizing Center are providing legal services and support to concerned students
