Trinity Byars scored two goals, including one in stoppage time, as the San Diego Wave forged a 2-2 tie against the Kansas City Current on Friday night in a showdown between the National Women’s Soccer League’s first-place club and the team with the league’s biggest home-field advantage. Byars’ equalizer not only pulled the Wave even, it also poked a hole in the Current’s biggest strength.
Kansas City was 6-0-0 at home this season heading into Friday’s match, outscoring their opponents by a combined 14-3. Friday’s draw was just the second at CKPC Stadium since the start of the 2024 season. Kansas City is 26-5-2 at home during that time. Byars opened scoring in the eighth minute, giving the Wave a 1-0 lead.
The Current pulled even in the 52nd minute, when Croix Bethune rattled the back of the net; Temwa Chawinga’s goal nine minutes later gave the hosts a lead that held until Byars’ extra-time heroics.
