The Navy hasn’t specified what type of repairs are needed, but the ship is likely to be out of service for at least 18 months.

The USS Boxer, the flagship of the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group, arrives at Naval Base San Diego, ending a seven-month deployment Nov. 27, 2019, in San Diego, California. The San Diego-based assault ship USS Boxer, which has spent more time holed up in repair yards in recent years than traveling the open seas, will return to the yards for another long stay when it returns from deployment, the Navy said. The Navy did not say what kind of repairs and upgrades will be made.

The Boxer deployed to the Indo-Pacific on April 1 but had to return to San Diego Bay just 10 days later to deal with mechanical problems involving its rudder. It was the latest in a series of mechanical setbacks for the ship, which hadn’t gone on deployment for five years — an unusually long time to be out of service.

The warship carries Marine amphibious forces and a variety of aircraft, and it is one of the most versatile vessels that operates out of San Diego.
