SANDAG proposes the Purple Line, a high-speed train connecting San Ysidro to Sorrento Mesa, to alleviate traffic congestion and improve public transit options in San Diego County.
Sorrento Valley is the leading employment hub in San Diego County, employing 8% of the region's workforce, as per SANDAG . Kerney Mesa ranks second with 125,000 employees but only 1% reside in the area. Approximately 4% of Sorrento Valley employees live and work there. Both employment centers are located near I-805, one of San Diego County's busiest highways. Hundreds of thousands of vehicles traverse this route daily, many originating from more densely populated areas south of I-8.
This results in substantial traffic congestion, extending a typical 14-mile journey to over 30 minutes. However, only 4% of commuters utilize public transportation to reach these areas, likely due to the average bus trip exceeding an hour. SANDAG has ambitious plans for this corridor, proposing a rapid and convenient alternative while connecting underserved communities with a new high-speed train. The Purple Line concept envisions a high-capacity transit line spanning from San Ysidro to Sorrento Mesa, traversing Chula Vista, National City, City Heights, Mission Valley, Kearney Mesa, and University City. The plan aims to link densely populated areas like Chula Vista, City Heights, and North Park to major employment centers like Sorrento Valley and Kearney Mesa. It will also facilitate connections to the orange, green, and blue line trolleys, the COASTER commuter rail, and numerous bus routes. A key element is establishing the Purple Line as a high-speed, high-capacity, heavy rail system - the first in San Diego. Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner and North County Transit District's Coaster, while classified as commuter rail, operate at lower speeds with reduced capacity compared to heavy rail systems like the New York City Subway or the B (Red) and C (Purple) lines in Los Angeles
