The Pentagon is paying General Dynamics-NASSCO $20.5 million to keep designing a new generation of Navy submarine tender ships, work that could lead to big construction contracts for the San Diego shipyard.

The Navy plans to decommission its two remaining Emory S. Land-class tenders, 649-foot ships that have been servicing submarines for more than 40 years.NASSCO is the largest shipbuilder on the West Coast, and it specializes in the sort of auxiliary ships represented by the new sub tender program. The yard is currently building 742-foot fleet oilers for the Navy. It also recently finished building a 785-foot expeditionary sea base, a Navy vessel that serves as a pier-to-sea that can be used to deploy troops and equipment.
