Travel forecast being released morning of Tues. June 21

Pack the sunscreen, grab your red, white and blue garb and get ready because this Fourth of July is going to be one of the busiest on record for vacationers. With 3.3 million Southern Californians expected to travel this coming holiday weekend, projects trends for local travelers during the period of Independence Day holiday travel from June 30 through July 4.

“The volume of travelers we expect to see over Independence Day is a definite sign that summer travel is kicking into high gear,” said Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel. “Earlier this year, we started seeing the demand for travel increase and it’s not tapering off. People are ready for a break and despite things costing more, they are finding ways to still take that much-needed vacation.

“Knowing when and where congestion will build can help drivers avoid the stress of sitting in traffic,” Pishue said. His advice: Avoid traveling on Thursday and Friday before July 4. “This July 4 holiday, we expect to see the highest number of passengers we’ve seen since the pandemic began, likely within 10 percent of record peak levels at the airport,” she said.

San Diego is the runner-up for top travel destination for SoCal residents, right behind Las Vegas, according to AAA survey data.
