Largest settlement is $2.3M for man who suffered back injuries when hit by city trash truck in North Park
San Diego is paying out more than $3.5 million to settle lawsuits alleging the city is responsible for injuries from two vehicles crashes, illegal use of a chokehold by police and discrimination against a Black sewer worker.
Lawyers for the city said in court documents that the severity of Young’s injuries is in dispute, noting that he refused transport to a hospital at the scene and did not seek medical attention until several hours later. A civil jury in June found the city liable and voted to award Young more than $2.5 million: $1.6 million in future non-economic loss, $540,000 in past non-economic loss, $200,000 in future economic loss and $175,000 in past economic loss.In a second settlement, the city is paying $875,000 to Elante Shine, a man who was restrained by police using an unauthorized version of a carotid hold in December 2019 after a street fight.
According to court documents, both Rios and the city worker claim they had a green light at the time of the crash, raising the possibility that malfunctioning city stoplights were to blame.
