The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System has secured more than $60 million in state funding to help maintain its trolley system and beef up its electric bus fleet, officials announced this week.

MTS secured the funding through the California State Transportation Agency, which doled out a total of $690 million to agencies across the state. The money represents the San Diego agency’s largest competitive state grant to date. “The substantial investment by the state into the MTS system is encouraging as we look to continue growing ridership and advance our region’s priorities, including transitioning to a zero-emissions bus fleet,” said San Diego City Councilmember Stephen Whitburn, who chairs the MTS board. “Building and maintaining MTS infrastructure is vital to our mission of providing safe and reliable service for riders in the years ahead.”trolley tracks, between downtown San Diego and El Cajon.

About $12 million is slated to help electrify bus operations in Kearny Mesa, including the construction of an overhead charging system for 30 buses.
