Longtime CEO retires while entire local board of directors is replaced
San Diego County canceled a slew of contracts with Volunteers of America Southwest California Inc. in 2020, after questionable spending and documentation were found. The company was identified as RezCare Pharmacy, which was run by former board chairman Philip Curtis. Curtis never responded to a message left at the Kearny Mesa business, and it was never clear how much money the charity paid his business.
The San Diego chapter of Volunteers of America for decades provided housing, mental-health and other services to needy individuals and families across the county.
