The San Diego California Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is reopening to the public after three years of extensive renovations.
A public open house will be held from Thursday until July 11, with the temple scheduled for rededication on August 23. The renovations addressed structural concerns such as cracking windows and significantly updated interior features, including the creation of a new marriage waiting room and the combination of two sealing rooms into a single larger space. Prior to the open house, a media day was held on Monday where church leaders emphasized the temple's spiritual significance.
Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles stated that everything in the temple points to Jesus Christ, declaring it a place of holiness, peace, and revelation. The temple, originally dedicated in April 1993 as the church's 45th temple, is notable for its unique ten spires and distinctive exterior. Historian Spencer McBride explained that its white facade was created by embedding chips of marble into the plaster, a method reminiscent of the church's first temple in Kirkland.
This exterior, along with a two-level celestial room and a central atrium, makes the building architecturally significant. The renovation also restored the marble-crate facade, addressed staining from nearby traffic, and updated landscaping. Inside, paint, carpet, and bathrooms were refreshed, and the cafeteria and dining room were converted into a worker's break room and the new marriage waiting room.
For local members, the reopening is a major event, ending a three-year period where they had to travel farther to attend other temples. Member Jan Draper expressed joy at having their local temple accessible again without it being an all-day commitment. Deon Travers highlighted the open house as an opportunity to invite curious neighbors who have long seen the temple from the freeway but never entered.
Approximately 50,000 church members from southern Riverside County to Yuma, Arizona, will be assigned to the temple. The public tours, running Monday through Saturday, offer a rare chance for community members to experience the sacred interior, as temples are not normally open to the public after their initial dedication. This open house serves both as a celebration of the renovated sanctuary and as an outreach effort to share the faith's beliefs about its purpose as a house of God
