A myriad of events were held Saturday ahead of the Monday holiday that commemorates the day when the last enslaved Black people learned of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865

San Diegans across the county joined in on vibrant Juneteenth celebrations Saturday, commemorating the historic emancipation of enslaved Black Americans and fostering unity, reflection and joy throughout the community.

Coach Tiffany Coleman said that aside from learning majorette, hip hop and lyrical dance styles, she stresses to the dancers the importance of getting good grades, bonding through their friendships with one another and attending local cultural events. The event took on a somber note midday as the family continues to grapple with the loss of matriarch Thelma Cooper, who died March 11 at 92, as well asthat Sidney Cooper Sr.’s remains are missing from the plot the couple had intended to share.

“We are very disheartened about what happened and what took place with my mother and father,” Cooper said. “For my father to be lost is very disheartening and leaves quite a conundrum for our family in terms of how to resolve this.” NAACP chapter President Satia Austin said the event is an opportunity for the whole community to come together in celebration of diversity.
