The campers have daily discussions about how to navigate the complicated reality of having a sibling with special needs. They also have lots of time to play.Mo Langley started Sandy Feet in 2017 after volunteering for disability surf camps and realizing there weren't similar programs for siblings."We bring them to the beach, we make them feel like they're number one. They get to meet other kids just like them," she said.
"So, like, we were talking about, like, emotional boundaries for our siblings and for our parents and our friends," she said."Sometimes his emotions start to get, like, really dysregulated," she said.Mo Langley started Sandy Feet in 2017. She said she got into surfing in her 40s and started volunteering at surf camps for people with disabilities. She remembers working with a young girl one day who slipped off her boogie board into the waves.
"We bring them to the beach, we make them feel like they're number one, they get to meet other kids just like them because most of them don't know another child who has a sibling with special needs," she said."So that is really important to them, to feel like they're part of a community."Seven years later, some 500 kids have gone to Sandy Feet beach camps, after school programs and special events, Langley said.
