The San Antonio Zoo is preparing to open the new Congo Falls exhibit with special drone shows this weekend. The exhibit, spanning two acres, features gorilla habitats and is home to seven Western Lowland gorillas. Three male gorillas from the Dallas Zoo and three female gorillas from the Atlanta Zoo will be part of the habitat. The drone shows will showcase gorilla-inspired designs with 400 drones.

The trio - Shana, B’wenzi, and Juba - will form a bachelor troop. All three gorillas are 23 years old and arrived earlier this week. Their transfer is part of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan, a program that supports genetically healthy populations of endangered species in accredited zoos.“Shana, B’wenzi and Juba are incredible, and we are honored to welcome them to their new home in Congo Falls,” said Tim Morrow, President & CEO of San Antonio Zoo. “Their presence here strengthens global gorilla conservation efforts and allows us to inspire guests in powerful new ways. This bachelor group, together with the family group, will make Congo Falls one of the most exciting gorilla habitats in the country.” Three female gorillas, Andi, Merry, and Anaka recently made the move from the Atlanta zoo as part of the Gorilla Species Survival Plan as well as the highly-anticipated opening of the Congo Falls habitat. On Thanksgiving, the zoo also welcomed Ajari, a 25-year-old male western lowland gorilla. This marks the return of western lowland gorillas to San Antonio for the first time in 35 years.Western lowland gorillas are listed as critically endangered due to serious challenges in the wild, including habitat destruction, poaching, and disease.
