Reader says she 'fell in love' with a dog posted by Dallas rescue group on Petfinder, but...
We started thinking about adopting a small dog, as it's been seven-plus years since our little Peachy passed. I've been looking online, mostly through Petfinder, and I ran across a little sweetie with whom I fell in love. She was with a rescue group on the other side of Dallas. My application was rejected, though, because I live far away, and they don't have volunteers here to do a home visit.
Their biggest requirement is a fenced-in yard, which I have, and never mind that my dog never goes outside unsupervised. We have coyotes here, so that's a no-brainer. My suggestion was met with crickets. If a rescue group wants to adopt dogs out only to a specific area, it shouldn't post on Petfinder since those posts can go nationwide. I would drive to Dallas for a dog.I am sorry you were rejected for living so far away. Dallas seems a reasonable distance to drive for a pet, especially when you consider pets are transported all over the state and country to find them new homes.
On Petfinder, you can designate your interest in adoptable pets up to 100 miles away. “Anywhere" is another option, but clearly, some groups don't adopt out all over. When you do your next search, limit it to San Antonio and up to 50 miles, and hopefully, you can find a dog closer to home.
