The only Texas charter school dedicated to children with dyslexia is set to open in the fall of 2024 with a class 115 second-graders.
A charter school set to open in San Antonio next year will specialize in teaching kids with dyslexia and, its founders hope, help plug a gaping hole in the educational ecosystem., a San Antonio-based nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness about the learning disability that hampers reading.Organizers are negotiating with the DoSeum to provide a location for the school’s first class, expected to number about 115 second-graders, for its opening in August of 2024.
The DoSeum “incubation space” would be temporary while the school looks for a permanent campus, Dean said. Gutierrez worked as a dyslexia facilitator in South San Antonio Independent School District. Like Dean, she fell into the specialty when her own child began struggling in school.A dual-language educator for a decade, Gutierrez couldn’t find a certified academic language therapist for her daughter, so she got the certification herself. There are only 34 with it in San Antonio — maybe because it takes 250 coursework hours, 700 residency hours and an exam.
