As fatal overdoses across San Antonio and Bexar County continue to surge, city and county leaders plan to pass an unprecedented resolution later this month to declare drug overdoses a public health crisis. City leaders hope the move will raise awareness about the scourge and prioritize city resources to address overdoses. Perhaps, they say, it will also give the city and county a leg up in grant applications for additional funding.
Lifesaving Narcan tough to find in Texas pharmacies In 2013, there were 197 overdoses in Bexar County, an analysis of state health department shows. Last year, there were 501, a 154% increase. Fentanyl and other synthetic narcotics contributed to 183 deaths of those deaths, compared with 14 in 2019, state health department data show. In 2013, autopsies detected the presence of psychostimulants such as meth in just 18 deaths in the county. In 2023, the number was 295, a 16-fold increase.
