System failure and human error plunged the city into darkness 47 years ago this week in San Antonio history. The citywide power blackout on Oct. 16, 1977, was the result of what City Public Service said was a “failure in the relay system,” at its Calaveras Lake plant, according to news archives. Diesel generators that CPS installed after a blackout in 1949 failed to kick in, leaving some residents and businesses in the dark for up to three hours. The power outage started at 7:08 p.m.

She’s a standout student and campus leader. She interviewed a civil rights icon. And she’s 10. San Antonio police worked to keep order, patrolling downtown streets and directing drivers abruptly left without working traffic lights. A story in the San Antonio Express said, “police immediately went into action,” resulting in “only two cases of looting reported.” There were accounts of traffic jams downtown and numerous car crashes across the city. All electricity was restored by 10:02 p.m.
