The Rockets won a tie-breaker over the Spurs for the distinction of having the league's second-worst record for draft lottery purposes
San Antonio Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan, center, watches from the sidelines during the first half of an NBA basketball game against the Dallas Mavericks in Dallas, Sunday, April 9, 2023. A little more than a week after the end of the NBA regular season, the Spurs lost again Monday. This time, it was not helpful to their place in the June draft.
Having ended the campaign at 22-60 and in a tie with Houston for the second-worst record in the league, the Spurs came out on the wrong end of a tiebreaker drawing with the Rockets. For draft lottery purposes, Houston will be considered the club with the second-worst record. The Spurs own the third-worst.
The distinction makes little difference in the clubs' quest to land the No. 1 overall pick in the May 16 draft lottery. The Spurs, Houston and Detroit -- which clocked the NBA's poorest mark at 17-65, each own identical 14 percent odds at drawing the top slot. The difference lies in how far down the pecking order the team's might slide. By winning Monday's drawing against the Spurs, Houston can drop no further than No. 6. The Spurs can fall to No. 7.
The single landing spot most statistically likely for the Spurs is No. 6 . For the Rockets, it is No. 5 .
