Local shelters in San Antonio are mobilizing to help the homeless population cope with an impending cold weather event. Outreach teams are working tirelessly to bring people into shelters, and shelters are opening additional spaces to accommodate the influx.

President Joe Biden will eulogize the late former President Jimmy Carter at his funeral at the Washington National Cathedral in D.C. Local shelters are working overtime to prepare for this week's cold weather . Outreach teams are hitting the streets, bringing the homeless into shelters. They say it's an all-night effort, with workers covering shifts from 2 p.m. to 5 a.m. 'We know how dangerous that can be,' said Christian Assistant Ministry's (CAM) homeless response coordinator, Roger Arreola.

'So, we definitely want to try to get them to any kind of shelter that we can.' The next two days are expected to bring freezing temperatures and rain, leaving those without a place to go at risk. 'You're dealing with potential for frost bite. If anyone has an underlying health condition and they get sick because they're out in the elements,' said Terri Behling, Director of Communications for Hope For Haven. 'We want to make sure that they have a safe place to go.' She said the shelter has been operating over capacity for years, but they're still offering help for those in need. 'At a minimum, we're going to give them some hand warmers, some coats and blankets, anything that we have on hand to help them,' Behling said. 'We will open additional flex space as needed for the community, especially tonight and tomorrow night.' Arreola is one of the people spending his night shuttling people from CAM to Communities Under the Bridge. 'The shelters overflow really fast,' he explained. 'What we really want to do is try to give them that little bit of room, breathing room, so that way, when Central or the police department do bring people, they'll have the room for them and not have to try to figure out how to get them into another shelter.' Shelters are doing this in hopes of also avoiding the possible danger that comes with being stuck outside. 'We're providing beanies, gloves, scarves, anything that we can, hopefully, to keep them warmer,' Arreola explained. 'I mean, we're definitely willing to do whatever it takes to try to save a life.' 'It's really just another reminder to all of us in the community to come up with some solutions and make sure that we're working together to ensure that everyone, regardless of their situation, has an opportunity to have shelter,' Behling said. On top of these efforts, shelters like the Salvation Army and Haven for Hope are also holding clothing drives and taking donations of warm items for people in need
