San Antonio school districts have continued to raise pay, offer incentives, provide longer hours and host regular recruiting events to hire school bus drivers.
Veteran school bus driver Jan Miller has many tattoos, but the bright yellow Minion grinning on her right calf is one of the most special. It wears round spectacles, black boots and denim overalls with an “M” in the middle that stands for Mason . When she looks at it, or at the stuffed “ Despicable Me ” character that hangs from her rearview mirror, Miller is reminded of the student with cerebral palsy who rode her school bus for years before he died.
currently has 130 drivers and offers a starting rate of $17.25 per hour. It is one of just two local school districts with no vacancies. Even at the height of the pandemic, the cash-strapped district did not have a driver shortage, Graf said. He attributes that success to aggressive recruiting. In 2019, the district closed a vacant position and used the money to hire a talent acquisition manager who oversees a recruiting team made up of bus drivers.
