Even thousands of miles away from the Alamo City, the breakfast taco remains a fresh memory regardless of distance and time.
Breakfast tacos are the meal I never knew I needed, until it was thousands of miles out of reach. In the early 1960s, you couldn’t find breakfast tacos, or tacos of any kind, on menus in Columbus , Ga. As kids, we awoke to the clamor of our great-grandmother stirring, mixing and frying our morning meal. The aroma of bacon, eggs, toast, pancakes, waffles and grits wafted from the kitchen into every room of the two-story apartment.
Every dish tells a story': Rideshare Foodie experiences culture and cuisine of nation's 50 states. It wasn’t until after 1975, when I enlisted in the Air Force, that I discovered the Tex-Mex standard. Thanksgiving was days away when Anita, our supervisor, called us together at 7:30 a.m., before the workday began.

On delivery days, before we loaded supplies on blue pickups, we consumed many tacos and washed them down with hot black coffee or cold soda. It was a good day when a sergeant said the magic words, “I’ll buy, you fly.” Forgive my fuzzy memory about the price of a taco in the late 1970s, but it probably cost less than a dollar, which we were eager to keep.

Limes.
