Guadalupe Cultural Arts CenterThe country's first and longest-running conjunto festival, celebrating the beloved Texas musical tradition, takes place at the Guadalupe Theater and Rosedale Park from May 17 to 21, according to a news release. Artist Elisa de Hoyos, of Weslaco, won the festival's poster contest, selected by judges during an open competition as the winner of a $2,000 prize.
The poster will be used for all promotion and marketing of the festival, which also featured poster competitions for students in middle school, high school and college.The historic Luther Hotel — frequented by LBJ and Shirley Temple — could be demolished. "The Tejano Conjunto Festival is ... internationally recognized as the most influential event for this beloved and popular Texas musical tradition," the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, which puts on the festival, wrote in a news release. The highlight"is the opportunity to hear the very best in conjunto music from all across the many different styles played regionally in Texas.
The festival begins Wednesday, May 17, with a free seniors dance and artists including Eddie Lalo Torres and Santiago Jimenez Jr. The festival concludes Sunday with bands including Los Texmaniacs featuring Flaco Jimenez and Boni Mauricio y Los Maximos.
