Migration time means other hummingbird species, especially ruby-throats and rufous hummingbirds, also will be visiting our neighborhoods. It can be hectic and exciting as all three species seek to dominate the sugar-water feeder and the blooms.I make a point to have containers with firebush, porterweed and mistflower in the sun on the patio, and pentas and firespike in the shade. The resultant dogfights between competing hummingbirds are very entertaining.
In addition to hummingbirds, you can attract seed-eating birds and even insect-eating birds into your landscape for observation.Obtain wildflower seeds and spread them over an area in full sun where the seed will make contact with the soil. Single species seed packets and seed mixes are available from area nurseries and internet seed companies.
Irises do best when they are thinned out in the bed every four to five years. Allow 18 inches between the remaining plants, and do not plant the replanted thinned plants any deeper than with the rhizome top level with the soil surface.
