Scammers are impersonating city officials and calling San Antonio residents claiming they missed jury duty. They demand payment to resolve the fake summons.

If you’ve gotten a call recently from a so-called city official about missing a jury summons, you could be the victim of a new phone scam targeting San Antonio residents. The San Antonio Police Department called attention to the scam in a recent Facebook post. It said the swindlers use spoofed phone numbers beginning with the 210 area code, followed by 207-, the standard prefix for San Antonio city government numbers.

Once someone answers their phone call, the scammers identify themselves as local law enforcement officers and inform the person on the line that they missed a court order requiring them to appear for jury duty. According to the Facebook post, the scammers may ask for a payment to resolve the bogus jury summons. “Do not be a victim,” SAPD wrote. “The San Antonio Police Department will NEVER contact citizens and ask for a payment via phone or to transfer money to a certain account.” The agency urged residents to be aware of who they are speaking to and verify the person on the other line before sharing any identifying information over the phone. If you fell victim to the scam, call SAPD’s non-emergency number at 210-207-7273 to file a police report. The Federal Trade Commission says scammers often pretend to be from a well-known organization using fake phone numbers and phones. They often say there’s a problem, like that their target is in trouble with the government, to get personal information. Other times they claim you won a contest but have to pay a fee to claim the prize. They typically pressure their target to act immediately and request payment in a specific way, such as wiring money through a company such as MoneyGram or using cryptocurrency
