One of the victories that critics of McCarthy won during the protracted debate last week was a promise to cut government spending back to 2022 levels, which on paper would mean cutting the current Pentagon budget by about $75 billion. If that happened, it would be one of the largest single-year reductions of the U.S. military budget in history.
