The San Antonio City Council’s Planning and Community Development Committee voted 4-0 on Friday morning to keep a one-year, $50,000 pilot program to cover pet deposits for low-income residents from moving forward.

The city’s housing assistance program already includes pet deposits for people who need relocation assistance, but the proposed pilot program would have been open to anyone trying to foster or adopt a pet from Animal Care Services. They also would have had to qualify under the city’s “ACS Assistant to the Director Shannon Oster-Gabrielson said hundreds of animals are surrendered by their owners every year.
Two of the co-signers to McKee-Rodriguez’s proposal — Adriana Rocha Garcia and Teri Castillo — also voted to kill it.
