San Antonio, Austin migrant busing partnership launches as border crossings fall
The city of San Antonio initially expected to bus up to 120 migrants a day to Austin so they could fly out of that city’s airport, alleviating some of the burden on San Antonio International Airport.
That’s because the number of migrants passing through San Antonio has fallen in the days after the Biden administrationThe U.S. government has used Title 42, a pandemic-era emergency health order, to turn away migrants, including asylum seekers, at the border. The administration previously applied the order to Venezuelans in October in an attempt to curb the number of migrants from that nation arriving at the Texas-Mexico border.
“This type of creative solution will be necessary until Congress passes much-needed, long-awaited immigration reform,” he said. The city can send as many as three charter buses to Austin per day, each carrying up to 40 migrants, if the number of migrants arriving in San Antonio increases, said city spokesperson Laura Mayes.
