People in San Antonio who have loved ones in Israel are relying on consistent communication to make sure they are safe.
"Somebody that I really love and care for is going through that and it just it really concerns me especially just watching on the news and seeing all the videos, the horrifying videos," said Tatiana Pena-Martinez, who previously lived in Israel.
Pena-Martinez lived in Israel for a few years until she moved out of the country in 2019. Pena-Martinez said Israel is dear to her heart and her best friend Sam still lives there. “It's been really terrifying few hours, like the past day and half has been like spent in terror and there's just constant fear that what if they get to Tel Aviv What if it escalates more,” said Sam. The uncertainty that comes with listening to Sam’s stories, Pena-Martinez said, worries her that much more for what will happen as this war continues. That’s why Pena-Martinez said that staying in constant contact with them has become one of her main priorities. “We have a group chat and I just message them and ask them if they're doing okay. I'm just checking in on them,” said Pena-Martinez. Yodam Hochman was born in Israel and said his entire family still lives there. That’s why he said even with the paralyzing fear he feels, leaving Israel hasn’t even crossed his mind. “My parents are older in their late 60s so it's not viable for us to move so for this reason, I don't even think about it. So, it's my home and it's the only home I have,” said Hochman. Pena-Martinez said she had planned to visit her friend in Israel next year and hopes that’s still possible.
