Democrats see flipping state House seats as a way to fight Gov. Greg Abbott's effort to enact a private school voucher plan in the next legislative session.

San Antonio will take center stage this year in Democrats ’ efforts to flip Texas House seats and deprive Gov. Greg Abbott of enough votes to pass his private school voucher plan. “The Texas House Democratic Caucus ground zero is San Antonio . No doubt about it, full stop,” Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer , a San Antonio Democrat and leader of the minority party caucus in the state House, told Hearst Newspapers at the state party’s convention in El Paso last week.

After GOP runoff election, Greg Abbott says Texas House now has the votes to pass school vouchers After the state’s political maps were redrawn in 2020 by the Republican-controlled Legislature, whose leaders sought to lock in their majority in each chamber, few races around the state are expected to be competitive. In the Texas House, Martinez Fischer estimated there will be between three and 10 legislative seats in play this November — with two of them in San Antonio.
