Over 6 inches of rain was recorded at San Antonio International Airport on Thursday, the highest one-day rainfall total since 2013.

We absolutely needed the rain, but that was too much at one time. Extremely slow-moving thunderstorms moved across South Central Texas overnight and into the early morning hours on Thursday. At times, storms became stationary, dropping upwards of 2 to 3 inches of rain per hour over already-soaked regions.

Some of the heaviest rainfall fell over Bexar County. San Antonio International Airport, the city’s official weather observation station, recorded an incredible 6.37 inches of rain: 0.26 inch Wednesday night followed by 6.11 inches early Thursday. That easily broke the daily record of 3.26 inches of rain, set back in 1973. The 6.11 inches of rain Thursday is also the highest one-day rainfall total in San Antonio in more than 12 years, since 9.87 inches of rain fell on May 25, 2013. Today also ranks as the second-wettest June day in San Antonio’s history, slightly behind the 6.18 inches that was recorded on June 3, 1951. Much of the rainfall occurred in a short period of time. San Antonio recorded 5.29 inches of rain in just 2 hours, between 2 and 4 a.m. Thursday morning. After a break in the rainfall between 6 and 9 a.m., a few scattered storms redeveloped and dropped additional rainfall between 9 and 11 a.m. MORE: Four dead amid flooding on Northeast Side. The rapid onset of heavy rain forced dozens of road closures across Bexar County, due to low water crossings. Several cars were trapped by floodwaters. Overall, firefighters responded to 65 calls for water rescue in San Antonio and one watercraft rescue. The far West Side of San Antonio recorded slightly higher rainfall totals. Rainfall totals near the intersection of Culebra Road and West Loop 1604 North was measured at 6.74 inches. An area 2 miles South of Helotes recorded 7.65 inches of rain. Farther north, New Braunfels totaled a still-impressive 5.1 inches of rain. However, most of the storms stayed south and west of Austin, with only 0.36 inch recorded in the state’s capital. Were there any tornadoes? Many San Antonio residents on the Northwest Side were woken up by a tornado warning notification on their phones just before midnight. The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Helotes, Leon Valley and Castle Hills at 11:51 a.m. Wednesday, due to strong radar-indicated rotation. Thankfully, it appears that a tornado never actually formed with this particular storm. The rotation weakened, and the tornado warning was canceled at 12:15 a.m. Thursday. However, a confirmed tornado touched the ground 5 miles miles south of Wimberley, in Hays County. The National Weather Service noted damage to trees, windows and a roof. The Hays County Sheriff’s Office reported that there were no injuries in regard to this tornado. Any more rain coming? Scattered showers and thunderstorms will remain possible through the morning and early afternoon. Thankfully, totals are expected to be limited, with most spots receiving less than a half-inch of additional rainfall. Quieter conditions are expected by this evening and overnight, with only a 20% chance of a few isolated showers and storms expected. Most areas will stay dry, and floodwaters will start to recede. The weekend is expected to be mostly dry as well, with only a 10 to 20% chance of scattered showers and storms from Friday through Sunday, Yearly rainfall total With the 6.37 inches that fell overnight, San Antonio's rainfall total is up to 18.22 inches so far in 2025. San Antonio is now 4.1 inches of rain above-average through this point in the year. However, just because rainfall is now above average this year does not mean that we are done with the drought. The Alamo City is still nearly 38 inches of rain below average since the start of 2022. While this burst of rainfall will provide much needed moisture and likely raise lake and aquifer levels slightly, it will only put a small dent in the long-term drought.
