The school district’s new plan is designed to improve community engagement and student outcomes — and by extension, financial stability.

Trustees informally accepted the plan late last month — no vote on it is required — but had some questions. They wanted to make sure updates to it are publicized and all that feedback becomes a permanent feature. A 100-member committee will be appointed to help with that.

Instructional coach Celia Correa works with fourth and fifth-grade students in a mariachi class at Graebner Elementary on Feb. 8. The SAISD board OK’d a strategic plan weeks later that seeks to equalize opportunities by expanding “choice” schools like Graebner and attack declines in attendance and enrollment.“We had over 1,200 parents who showed up for on-campus engagement opportunities to give feedback on the plan. We had over 400 responses from our community,” he added.

Always Learning has big goals, both wide-angle and specific: Improving social and emotional readiness, and outcomes in reading and writing, for all students. Improving math outcomes for Black students. Improving college readiness for students with disabilities. “It really is going to be a mind shift and it’s a commitment,” said Alejandra Lopez, president of the San Antonio Alliance of Teachers and Support Personnel, during a feedback session this year.

Overcoming unequal access to high quality programs, curriculum and educators is one top priority. The plan describes how to get there in detail, from creating a system that promotes a student-centered learning environment to having the right protocols and practices to support it.

“Analyze the cost difference between the optimal staffing aligned to campus need and enrollment, and the current existing staffing model to determine the excess budget that can be restructured by January 2024,” reads one of the actions under a component focused on building a sustainable financial foundation for the district.
