San Antonio is a top city for solar energy, but CPS Energy subsidies for panels may end soon
Fields of solar panels at OCI Solar Power's Alamo 1 Solar Farm are seen Sept. 23, 2020 as CPS Energy's coal-powered electric plant is seen in the background.San Antonio is the fifth largest producer of solar energy among U.S. cities, with solar panels here generating more power than in any other municipality in Texas, according to a new report.
CPS has increased its reliance on solar power over the last decade to reduce emissions, and because solar panels produce the most power when San Antonians need it — when they’re cranking up the AC on hot, sunny days.End of San Antonio’s last coal-fired power plant in sight; CPS likely to rely more on natural gasLos Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas and Honolulu are the only U.S. cities that generate more solar power than San Antonio.
In the first three months of this year, Texas solar farms generated 85 percent more power than in the same period last year. In March alone, solar panels in the state produced twice as much electricity as they generated in all of 2016. Solar is poised to account for an even larger share of electricity in San Antonio. With about a dozen solar farms located across Texas, CPS currently has a total capacity of 970 megawatts of solar.
