Although the Missions welcomed the team, the game's start time was changed so the Dodgers wouldn't have to stay overnight.
So March 31, 1949, was the day San Antonio bum-rushed the Dodgers out of town in the service of segregation.; by the mid-1960s, most public accommodations were at least officially open to all.
Robinson and Campanella went on to have stellar careers. Both were named most valuable player several times each, were selected to play in multiple All-Star games and racked up many pennant and World Series wins. Robinson became baseball’s first Black television analyst and was a leader in the civil rights movement.
Since 2004, April 15 has been celebrated as Jackie Robinson Day throughout the major league, honoring the anniversary of his barrier-breaking accomplishments. According to the organization’s website, , the league requests that on that day, “every player and all on-field personnel wear his No. 42” during games.As for a San Antonio Baseball Day, maybe it should honor San Antonio players, not just the big shots from out of town.
During the first half of the 20th century, there were amateur baseball teams for nearly any male who wanted to play, representing schools, churches, YMCAs, businesses, military units, recreation centers and neighborhoods. Though they may not always have played together, there were opportunities for white, Black and Hispanic players to take part in the national pastime … most for nothing more than love of the game.
