Now is the time for plant tomatoes and other vegetables, get ahead of winter weeds and prepare for the monarch butterflies' arrival.
We often think there is not much action in the vegetable garden and landscape in San Antonio in August, but here are several opportunities to consider. You must plant your fall tomatoes if you want to beat the cold weather and harvest a crop. Find the largest transplants possible of the recommended determinate and/or heat setting varieties: Thunderbird , Celebrity, Tycoon, Red Snapper , Ruby Crush , Rambler , Heat Wave , BHN 958 , Valley Cat and HM2436 .
Here are the next steps It is important that the plants continue an active growth effort. If you are not ready to put the transplant in its final container or garden spot, pot it up for a few weeks in a 1 gallon or larger container fertilized with Osmocote or a soluble fertilizer such as Miracle Grow. The 19-05-09 slow-release lawn fertilizer works well for fertilizing the plants in the garden because half of the nitrogen is released quickly and the rest is available as the plants mature.
