The need for food remains great, the nonprofit's CEO said. But smaller distributions are easier on staff and volunteers and more 'dignified' for recipients.
Searching for a more manageable and 'dignified' way to distribute free groceries to those in need, the San Antonio Food Bank is moving away from the mass distributions that served as a lifeline for hundreds of thousands of South Texans during the pandemic. Eric Cooper , the food bank's president and CEO, said the nonprofit is transitioning away from the 'mega-distributions' held at Gustafson Stadium on the Northwest Side .
desperate Texans descend on San Antonio Food Bank distribution 'We are not losing momentum,' Cooper said. 'We are just strategically distributing in a more tailored way at a more manageable volume.' Cooper said the nonprofit's new plan calls for smaller giveaways throughout the region. 'Look for the Food Bank to be in many corners of the city doing pop-up distributions that will serve a small number of households in a more dignified way,' he said.
In hard times, food bank staff puts clients' needs first The mass giveaways are a holdover from the pandemic, which triggered the nation's worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. In 2020, the food bank helped feed 120,000 households a week, double the number it assisted before the emergence of COVID-19. The agency said it distributed more than $160 million worth of food from March 2020 through February 2021, feeding 625,000 people.
