A recent cycling event in San Antonio highlights the growing popularity of cycling in the city. However, local cyclists are calling for safer streets and more infrastructure to support this growth.

More than 3,000 riders participated in the first L’Etape cycling event in San Antonio and in North America on April 10, 2022. Cyclists could choose between the 100, 60 and 25-mile races. Cyclists in San Antonio are calling for safer streets and more infrastructure to support growing cycling popularity. Robert Rivard, founder of the SATX Social Ride, and Mitchell Keogh, firefighter and avid cyclist, discuss the state of cycling in San Antonio—the good, bad and ugly.

Rivard believes the city has become more urban but hasn't prioritized cycling infrastructure. He notes the lack of complete streets and dedicated bike lanes. While events like the Tour de France and the YMCA’s Siclovia have brought cycling attention, Rivard says they don't account for the needs of the cycling community. Keogh, who uses the Strava app to unite cyclists, highlights the importance of protected bike lanes for everyday commuting and errands. He believes the city needs to prioritize infrastructure to encourage more people to ride bikes instead of just for recreation.
