San Antonio City Manager Erik Walsh received a significant pay raise, increasing his salary to $461,000 annually. This makes him the highest-paid city manager in Texas when factoring in benefits and perks.
City Council members showered City Manager Erik Walsh with praise before awarding him a nearly $87,000 pay bump — a 23% pay raise. That amendment to his employment contract puts his new base salary at $461,000 effective Jan. 1. That is slightly behind Austin City Manager T.C. Broadnax, who is paid just over $470,000.
But according to city figures, Walsh will be the best paid city manager in Texas when taking into account what it calls his “projected cash compensation” — his salary plus perks, such as a $500 monthly car allowance. That will bring his compensation to $476,300, which is about $4,400 more than Broadnax pockets, the city said. “One of the obligations that we have to run a city is to make sure that we hire the best damn city manager in the United States, because we deserve nothing less,” District 8 Councilman Manny Peláez said ahead of the vote to amend Walsh’s contract. “And so for me, Erik, this is not about you. This vote I’m taking today is about retaining you, but also recruiting the next Erik Walsh.” Thursday’s 9-1 vote was the first time the mayor and City Council have updated the document since promoting Walsh from deputy city manager to city manager in January 2019. In addition to increasing his base salary, the amended contract will allow him to serve for an “indefinite term” and will remove his $75 phone allowance. District 6 Councilwoman Melissa Cabello Havrda was the only council member who opposed the pay increase for Walsh. District 9 Councilman John Courage was absent. “I can’t in good conscience approve a $100,000 raise with poverty levels as they are in this city, when so many people in San Antonio are struggling and were still scrambling to fund funding for essential city services,” said Cabello Havrda, who is running for mayo
