The City of San Antonio is celebrating the national accreditation of the 11 local comprehensive senior centers with members.
For the past four years, Elbert “LB” Young has emceed weekly rounds of karaoke at the Bob Ross Senior Center, where members meet for activities, fun and camaraderie. Recently, more than 50 people lined tables in the dining room, eating lunch as friends sang standards that transported them to yesteryear. Men wearing baseball caps embroidered with military emblems on the bill nodded as George J. Rippel crooned “Strangers in the Night.
Here’s where you can find services for elderly residents in San Antonio The songfest was well underway when Yolanda Perez, human services administrator, arrived to announce a designation to Veronica Saldate, senior center manager, staff and members that their center was one of 11 in San Antonio to receive national accreditation. The recognition included the city’s 11 senior centers among 101 accredited sites nationwide. The accreditation runs through February 2029.

Tucked away in the medical center was the 10th stop of the city’s recognition tour. The brick one-story building at 2219 Babcock was the city’s first senior center—the locale honors Ross, a former District 8 councilman known for protecting the rights of older residents.
