Delivering a range of highlights including a 40-yard touchdown pass from a punter to a center, the Brahmas showed a spark that was missing last year.
Facing fourth-and-11 and the prospect of a 58-yard field goal in the closing seconds before halftime, the San Antonio Brahmas decided to dial up a trick play. They had never converted this particular gadget in practice, but they’d at least attempted it enough to feel confident pulling it out for their season opener. San Antonio appeared to line up for a field-goal try, but kicker Donald De La Haye instead motioned out wide to the left side of the formation.
Last season’s Brahmas struggled to generate a similar spark, reaching the 20-point threshold just once in the first eight weeks of the season and failing to deliver a home win until Week 9. Despite the shortcomings, San Antonio averaged the second-highest attendance total in the XFL last year at 14,983. The 13,164 figure the Alamodome hosted for an 11 a.m. kickoff on Easter fell between the two attendance totals as the league debuted Saturday — 14,153 in Arlington and 9,444 in Detroit.
