Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass were among the popular acts, but the Animals got booted despite their 1964 hit “The House of the Rising Sun.”

I read your column on some of the acts that appeared at the Theater for the Performing Arts . I was wondering if you’ve written about acts that appeared at the Arena during that time. I got to see Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass , and Sergio Mendes and Brasil ’66. I was 14 then. It was an exciting time. — Martha Walch , Ph.D. Yes to a previous column about the arena , but not about the entertainment featured there during HemisFair ’68, the world’s fair held April 6-Oct.6, 1968.

HemisFair ’68 scrapbook holds memories of big-name entertainers that came to San Antonio Sometimes called the Civic Center — as seen on some HemisFair signage — the complex was planned to be “a modern convention center of the first order … designed to accommodate the largest crowds ever yet invited to San Antonio,” as described by the San Antonio Express & News, Oct. 7, 1967. The other two buildings were the Theater for the Performing Arts and an exhibit hall.

While entertainment for the theater included a series produced by Creative Productions, headed by advertising executive Louis Pitluk, arena bookings were approved by HemisFair CEO James M. Gaines, one of the three original incorporators in 1962 of San Antonio Fair Inc., which planned and raised funds for the big event.

Early Elvis fans held him captive in auditorium There were hits — and misses. Dan Fleenor’s Hurricane Hall Drivers — “a squadron of 1968 sports cars plus a fleet of motorcycles join in crashing, smashing speed, thrilled and action” — packed in audiences for three shows a day, June 5-15, 1968.

From James Brown to Jane Fonda, San Antonio's downtown Pusi-Kat Club kept youth dancing in 1960s The two shows you saw met a warmer welcome. Trumpeter Herb Alpert, one of the founders of A&M Records, had put together what he called an “Ameriachi” band, based on the brassy Tijuana sound. Their instrumentals had scored hits and even a commercial for Teaberry Gum.
