JOHANNESBURG - The South African Municipal Workers Union gave the City of Joburg until the end of April to deal with corruption allegations within its ranks.
Earlier on Tuesday, the union - which represents approximately 60,000 municipal workers - held a media briefing at its headquarters in Joburg. In the briefing, leaders of the union said they had uncovered hundreds of millions of rands in corruption in the Joburg municipality. Samwu provincial secretary Mpho Tladinyane threatened massive labour action if the City of Joburg does not take concrete steps to address corruption by its officials. He said he also spoke to the city's political leadership over the claims that Samwu made.
"If these matters are not addressed by the end of April, you will then see what will happen. What happened at M2, is it M2 or N1, M1 yeah, on that particular day will be nothing. You see we don’t enter into a battle we can't win.”The matters are being investigated by the city’s group forensic investigation services.
