While maintaining existing price points could be part of the reason, the S23 wasn't significantly different from the S24 models, yet Samsung didn't hesitate to increase prices. The S25 series, however, is centered around a single major hardware upgrade: the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. This decision stems from the fact that Qualcomm has priced the Snapdragon 8 Elite above $200, squeezing Samsung's profit margins. Samsung's attempts to utilize its in-house Exynos 2500 processor or MediaTek's Dimensity 9400 chip in the S25 Ultra and S25+ were unsuccessful due to insufficient yield. Notably, even the base S25 won't feature an Exynos in Samsung's home market of South Korea, and the Exynos 2500 might not appear in a phone until much later, potentially as far out as 2026. While the S26 series is rumored to utilize the Snapdragon 8 Elite, the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 chipset is reportedly reserved for the eventual successor to the S25 Ultra. The root of this predicament lies in reports suggesting that Samsung will only have the desired quantity and quality of Exynos 2500 processors available in the first half of 2025, instead of the original target of the last quarter of 2024. This delay in Exynos production has pushed back the introduction of devices featuring this chipset to the second half of 2025, rather than the S25 series launching this week at a dedicated Unpacked event. Furthermore, Samsung was reportedly impressed by Qualcomm's presentation of a Snapdragon 8 Elite chip specifically designed for the S25 series, boasting performance and power consumption comparable to Apple's upcoming A18 Pro processor. Although the Snapdragon chip in the S25 outperforms the Exynos 2500 in benchmark tests, it comes at a significantly higher cost for Samsung.
