A recent discovery raises concerns about the security of Samsung's Secure Folder, a feature designed to protect sensitive data on Galaxy devices. Despite Samsung's claims of defense-grade security, a Redditor found that the contents of the Secure Folder can be accessed by malicious actors under certain circumstances.
Samsung 's Secure Folder , a feature designed to provide Galaxy users with a secure space for sensitive data like private files, apps, videos, and photos, relies on passcodes and encryption for protection. However, recent concerns raised by a Redditor suggest that the personal data stored within Secure Folder might not be as secure as advertised.
The Redditor claims that the contents of the Secure Folder are accessible to others even when the folder is locked, contradicting Samsung's assurances that Secure Folder is protected by the defense-grade Samsung Knox security platform, which encrypts all data stored there. The Secure Folder is intended to prevent unauthorized access to photos and videos even when unlocked, if an app requests to insert one. This protection, however, appears to work only for personal apps running from the main profile. If the app requesting access belongs to a work profile, a different scenario unfolds. Photos and videos hidden in a Galaxy device's Secure Folder can be accessed by attackers under specific circumstances. For instance, if someone gains physical control of your Samsung device and installs a work profile app like Shelter, they can view the photos and videos saved in your Secure Folder. This is because Shelter can create a work profile on any device, including one with a Secure Folder. It is important to note that, in this scenario, only photos and videos appear to be vulnerable, while other types of data may remain secure. There is some potential good news: if your work profile is set up by your employer with restrictions preventing access to work files, the photos and videos in your Secure Folder might remain protected. Additionally, encrypting your Secure Folder can prevent access to its files by the Android photo picker. While encryption is not enabled by default, you can activate it by selecting the 'encrypt' option in the Secure Folder menu
