Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra is the biggest, baddest Android phone - this year

The Galaxy S23 Ultra, like most Samsung flagships, has a tendency to oversaturate certain colors. The sky over the Memorial Park Land Bridge wasn’t actually this electric of a blue when the photo was shot.About the same time each year, makers of smartphones unveil the annual updates to their flagship products. Apple does it in the fall, while rival Samsung’s time is early in the calendar year.

My review unit is in the Phantom Black color, with a bump to12 gigabytes of memory and 512 megabytes of storage, and retailing for a whopping $1,380. last year as the design successor to its Note lineup, the much-beloved, oversized smartphone that gave inspiration to the tongue-in-cheek category name of “phablet.” The S23 iteration continues that lineage, and while Samsung may brand it as the “Ultra,” in its heart and soul it’s still a Note.

The display, as is the case with Samsung’s phones, is a gorgeous Dynamic AMOLED screen with a maximum 120-MHz refresh rate, which can drop as low as 1-MHz to conserve power. It’s the same 4K resolution as last year’s model. On the plus side, there are so many options and features buried in its menus and apps that you can customize the look and feel in almost infinite fashion.

I also was surprised to find that night photos didn’t always match up to the night-mode quality of the OnePlus 11 or the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The camera sometimes blew out lights on buildings, for example, in settings where the other cameras handled them just fine.
