One of Samsung's biggest new updates is not what you expect — but it's critical.
Whisper it quietly, but Samsung may just have fixed one of Android’s biggest issues. If this update does what it says, it may completely change the Android user experience. Beyond the threats fromfrom ad fraud, apps that hijack devices with apps garnering tens of millions of downloads, and then plague users with so many ads the phone becomes unusable.
The companies behind the ads pay the attacker, unaware that their content has been hijacked.The new setting has two levels. “Basic blocking” stops apps Samsung has already flagged for sending frequent ads. If you install an app on Samsung’s naughty list, it’s blocked. But it’s the second, more extreme setting that is much more interesting. “Intelligent blocking” uses on device processing to analyze notifications on your phone, determining if they’re real notifications or just ads, and then to block apps spewing out too many of these. As ever with AI, Samsung warns this may not always be accurate. But it will settle down and get more so, and it’s worth the teething issues.We’re in the era of AI-fueled threat and scam protection, and Android is leading the way.
